CONSTRUCTION OF DELANO SCHOOL BEGINS
Officials at the Delano Union School District broke ground Tuesday morning on a K-8 school that will become the district's 12th campus.
Kids of all grade levels, including preschool, will be housed at what is currently being called the Westside Educational Complex.
It's being built on 27 acres on Hiett and 11th avenues, and will total about 129,000 square feet. It's across from Robert F. Kennedy High School and near the Bakersfield College Delano campus.
"It's almost like an education row," said Jeffrey Cooley, coordinator of facilities and planning at Delano Union.
The school is being built with bond money from a measure passed in early 2000. It called for building four schools. Two have been built already -- Harvest Elementary and La Vina Middle schools.
The complex is essentially two schools on one campus. The school, however, will have one administrator.
It will cost $48 million to build, $42 million of which will be reimbursed by the state, Cooley said. Green technology and sustainability is a focus on school construction, and it will have "cool roofs" and solar panels.
The complex is expected to alleviate overcrowding on the west side of Delano, Cooley said.
It will be finished in time for the start of the 2012-13 school year. The district hopes to partner with the city and the high school district on several projects surrounding the school, Cooley said.
