The Marine Corps Reserve is seeking donations for its annual Toys for Tots program. This program collects and distributes toys for needy children during the holiday season.
A new, unwrapped toy for a child under age 10 can be donated at the Marine Corps Reserve Training Center, 4201 Chester Ave. There are more than 15 other drop-off locations in Bakersfield and other cities in Kern County. To see a list, visit www.toysfortots.org and select your city.
In Bakersfield, applications to receive a toy donation are due Friday. Call 325-2797 for information. The toys will be distributed to selected families Dec. 19 at the Marine Corps Reserve Center.
Assemblyman Danny Gilmore, R-Hanford, is partnering with all the high schools in the 30th District for a canned food drive. Canned food will be accepted at the schools until Friday, said Stephen Warren, field representative for the assemblyman.
Kern County schools participating are: Delano High, Cesar Chavez High, Robert F. Kennedy High, McFarland High, Wasco High, East Bakersfield High, Mira Monte High and Arvin High. The food will be taken to the Kern County Food Bank in Bakersfield, except for Arvin High School, which will donate to the Arvin Migrant Center.
A planning meeting for the Million Father March will be held at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at 2000 K St, fifth floor. Michael King, an organizer of the march, said it is designed to portray fathers in a positive light in the media.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center will hold a breakfast from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and a youth luncheon at noon Jan. 18, 2010 in honor of King's birthday. The Martin Luther King Community Center is at 1000 S. Owens St. in Bakersfield.
The breakfast is an adult event. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $200 for a table of 10. Sponsorships are also available. The lunch is a youth-oriented event and is free to anyone under 18.
Money raised will help the center in its training program to teach children non-violence and self-discipline, said Stephanie Campbell, committee chairwoman of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.
