KIMBERLY VAN HORNE, a professor at Bakersfield College, has earned a doctorate in education, curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix. The Bakersfield native’s doctoral dissertation is titled “An Investigation of the Success Phenomenon of Latino Developmental Community College Students: A Case Study.” Van Horne has been a teacher for 23 years, five of them at BC, where she has served as a senator in the Academic Senate. She is to become chairwoman of the Academic Development department July 1.

JOSÉ S. CANTÚ and DARYL VALDEZ have joined Schools Legal Service as bargaining specialists.

Cantú, a Kern native who formerly worked as a teacher, graduated from Cal State Bakersfield. He worked in human resources, in retirement counseling and workers compensation, for the office of the county Superintendent of Schools.

Valdez, a graduate of Cal State Bakersfield with a degree in business administration, has experience in collective bargaining and human resources. He worked as an executive at large oil and agricultural operations before opening a consulting practice.

MICHELE BRESSO and KATHY FREEMAN, faculty members of Bakersfield College, were accepted to National Endowment for the Humanities workshops.

Bresso, a Communication Department teacher at BC, was among 40 people accepted to the endowment’s Landmarks of American History and Culture workshop titled “The American Lyceum and Public Culture: The Oratory of Idealism, Opportunity and Abolition.” The workshop took place in late May at Northeastern University.

Freeman, who teaches in BC’s English Department, was accepted to the endowment’s Landmarks of History workshop titled “Landmarks of American Democracy: From Freedom Summer to the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike.” The one-week workshop, set to take place in July at Jackson State University in Mississippi, explores the evolution and impact of the Civil Rights Movement.

GAYLA GIBSON and OPAL MORLAND both have been named “Community Partner of the Year” by state Sen. Roy Ashburn. Both are veteran foster/adopt parents and work as foster parent coordinators for the Kern County Department of Human Services. Gibson, an emergency foster parent, is past treasurer for the Kern County Foster Parent Association. Morland is the junior past madam president of the ladies auxiliary for the Fraternal Order of Eagles 93.

JACK DOREMUS, GRI and broker associate for RE/MAX Magic, has completed the Certified Distressed Property Expert program. A 36-year veteran of Bakersfield’s real estate industry, Doremus is working to obtain mentorship in Brian Buffini’s “100 Days to Greatness” and “Ultimate Agent” programs.

Garces Memorial High School announced its new administrative team for the 2009-10 school year. It consists of Principal KATHLEEN BEARS, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs MIKE SUSANK and Dean of Students MICHELLE JACKMAN.

Bears has worked in education at Catholic high schools for 24 years, including 14 years at Garces, where she has worked as an instructor, chairwoman of the Science Department, director of summer school, dean of students, assistant principal for Academic Affairs and acting principal. She earned a bachelor’s degree at St. Mary’s Notre Dame, in Indiana, and a master’s degree at the University of La Verne.

Susank has worked at Garces for 13 years as an instructor, coach, advisor on the Faculty Senate and dean of students. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Claremont McKenna College and a master’s degree at Point Loma Nazarene University.

Jackman has worked in education at Catholic high schools for 16 years. Ten of those years were spent at Garces, where she has served as theology instructor, yearbook instructor and cheer moderator. She also served on the Faculty Senate and Behavior Review Board. Jackman earned a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential at Cal State Bakersfield.
