A 29-year-old Wasco man died Saturday after veering off westbound Highway 58 east of H Street in Bakersfield, going over the north embankment and striking a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Simon Samarripas was driving his 2003 Honda Accord fast when the incident occurred and in the collision his car was torn in half and he was ejected, a CHP news release said. It said he landed at Berneta Street below Highway 58 and died at the scene. It all happened at about 3:30 a.m.
GIRL SHOT
A 16-year-old girl was shot in the lower leg and taken to Kern Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries late Friday, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Police said the girl reported walking in the 3000 block of Lotus Lane in southeast Bakersfield when a late-model, black and four-door car drove by slowly, made a U-turn and a rear passenger started shooting. It happened at about 11:35 p.m., police said.
FIRE DOES $80,000 DAMAGE
A fire at 1020 S. Fairfax Road did about $80,000 damage late Friday, according to the Kern County Fire Department.
The dwelling was fully engulfed in flames at about 11:16 p.m. when city and county firefighters arrived. Fifteen firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which was under investigation.
No one was hurt.
DOZENS CITED IN DUI CHECKPOINT
The Bakersfield Police Department conducted a DUI/driver's license checkpoint Friday, impounding 91 vehicles plus citing 70 motorists for driving without a valid California driver's license and 21 for driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to an agency press release.
It said at the checkpoint, in the 2300 block of Mount Vernon Avenue, 2,489 vehicles passed through and 1,686 were screened. Six motorists were asked to perform field sobriety tests and of those, one, an adult male, was arrested on DUI charges.
Two motorists had outstanding warrants for their arrest; nine others were cited for miscellaneous vehicle code violations, the release said.
