Crime shorts: Motorcyclist killed when pickup runs stop sign

At approximately 2:17 p.m. on Monday officers of the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a report of a traffic collision involving two motorists at the intersection of Panama Lane and Old River Road. Upon arrival officers were informed that a 2008 Nissan Titan pickup, driven by Arnie Zumbrunner, 32, of Bakersfield ran a stop sign at the intersection and struck a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle being driven by a Dan Howard Brockett, 63, of Taft .
Brockett, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from his motorcycle and received major injuries. He was transported to Kern Medical Center where he died from his injuries. Zumbrunner was uninjured.
Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor to the accident. The investigation of the accident is on-going and anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call the Bakersfield Police Department's Traffic Division at 327-7111.

DELANO -- On Tuesday at approximately 11:21 a.m., a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department, for a structure fire in the 1600 block of Quincy Street, in Delano. 16 Kern County Firefighters responded to the incident, assisted by North Kern State Prison Fire Department. Their quick action prevented the fire from spreading throughout the house and was under control in less than 10 minutes.
Upon arrival, fire crews were faced with a developing fire in a second floor apartment of the structure. The first fire crew to arrive attacked the fire and searched the home. Other fire crews assisted in preventing the fire from spreading to other units, removing smoke and protecting property. The fire was contained to the room of origin.
Firefighters were able to save approximately $1 million of property. However, the fire destroyed an estimated $40,0000 of property. There were no reported injuries and no one was at home at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a pan of cooking oil left unattended on the stove. A neighbor was alerted to the fire by a domestic smoke alarm which had activated. One adult and four children were displaced by the fire.

TEHACHAPI -- On Tuesday at approximately 8:18 a.m., the Kern County Fire Department received a call for an injured person at AES Generation in the 13000 block of Chantico Rd, east of Tehachapi.
The injured worker was located on a work platform approximately 100 ft high on an electricity generating windmill. The worker had received moderate injures to the leg and arm, a company EMT was on scene.
A fire crew contacted the patient, secured the injuries and placed in a backboard. With the use of a mechanical lift the patient was brought to ground level and subsequently transferred to a local area hospital by a ground ambulance. This rescue was made more difficult and dangerous to rescuers due to the strong winds.
