Worth Noting: Kern Community Foundation grants given, St. Jude Dream Home and more

The Kern Community Foundation has chosen five recipients of the Kern Community Weingart Funds, totaling more than $63,000.
The recipients are:
* Arvin Family Resource Center, $8,500 to support children's dental examinations.
* Clinica Sierra Vista, $13,740 to buy prescription medications for rural homeless individuals.
* Kernville Family Resource Center, $15,000 for dental screenings.
* Mercy Foundation, $15,000 associated with enrolling children into health insurance programs.
* Taft College Foundation, $10,760 for dental screenings and follow-up.
The recipients were chosen out of 29 applicants, said Jan Lemucchi, the foundation's program and communications officer.
Funds for the grants come from the Weingart Foundation and the Kern Community Foundation.
The "early bird" deadline to buy tickets for the seventh annual St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is Friday.
Anyone who buys a ticket will be eligible to win the 2,305-square-foot, two-story house in northeast Bakersfield. Those who buy a ticket before Friday will also qualify to win $3,000 in groceries from Pro's Ranch Markets.
Winners of the house, valued at $290,000, and other prizes will be announced July 26 on KERO ABC 23.
A limited number of $100 tickets are available for the giveaway. All proceeds benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Tickets can be reserved at Kern Schools Federal Credit Union branches, Pro's Ranch Markets, Urner's, Randy Urner's Out Side and Hancock Fabrics or by calling 1-800-385-9134.
Wine Fest 2009, hosted by the Kern County Museum Foundation, will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. June 13 at the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Ave.
More than 30 wines will be available, said Heather Fowler, the foundation's executive director. Eight kinds of beers and other beverages will also be available.
"There will be something for everyone," Fowler said.
Tickets are $40 per person through Sunday. After Sunday, tickets will be $50. Proceeds benefit the museum.
