Zack Scrivner ended the guessing game about his political future Monday by formally announcing he'll run for a county supervisor post.

Scrivner, 35 and currently one of Bakersfield's seven City Council members, will aim for the seat being vacated by Supervisor Don Maben after the 2010 election.

The supervisor job is full time and includes a budget for staff. City Council members get a small stipend and are eligible for some benefits, including health care.

Scrivner's name had topped the list for a possible state Assembly run, if his boss, Jean Fuller, were to aim for the state Senate seat being vacated by termed-out Roy Ashburn.

But Scrivner said his "passion" is local government and a commute to Sacramento wasn't appealing.

"To be honest, my family is here," Scrivner said during a morning press conference by the fountain behind the county administrative building. "The most important thing is to be home with my two boys and wife."

Scrivner's parents and his wife, Christina, stood by with sons Zachary, who turned 3 on Monday, and Robert, 9 months old.

Ridgecrest is Christina's home turf, Scrivner pointed out. While the eastern Kern city isn't in the 2nd District, that connection could add oomph to a campaign already peppered with strong contenders: Maben staffer Mary Beth Garrison and former 2nd District Supervisor Steve Perez.

Scrivner said he'll be sticking with political consultant Mark Abernathy to manage his campaign.

"He's the best in the business," Scrivner said.
