Christine L. Frazier was named Kern County’s 20th superintendent of schools Tuesday, as was expected.
She was appointed by the Kern County Board of Education to replace Larry E. Reider, who will retire June 30.
“We’ve worked with Chris Frazier for several years. Her fiscal conservatism, work ethic and passion to help more of our children become successful not just in school but in a career are among the qualities we want in our county superintendent,” said board President Don Cowan said in a statement.
Educators and other community members advocated for her, he said.
Frazier has worked in education for more than 30 years, including as a teacher, principal and school district superintendent, according to a press release. She joined the Superintendent of Schools office in 1996 and since 2005 has been associate superintendent.
“Like Larry Reider, my first priority always is what’s best for children and what we can do to encourage more of our youth to view high school graduation not as an end to classroom instruction but rather a first step toward higher education or an in-demand job skill,” Frazier said in a statement.
Her career has involved both instruction and fiscal management. She’s developing a pilot project expected to debut this fall that seeks to direct more students into higher education and in-demand careers.
Frazier is married with three children, a son and two daughters. Two have graduated from college and a third now attends college.
