Lynn and Marv Larson go to the dog park on Kroll Way almost every day with one to three dogs for their business, Fetch! Pet Care.

"Sometimes we feel like we live there," Marv Larson said.

But the Larsons noticed there was nowhere for the dogs to drink water while they were at the park. Some residents would put buckets of water out for dogs, only for the buckets to be stolen overnight.

When Marv Larson asked the city about installing a water fountain for dogs in the park, he was told the city did not have money in the budget for that.

"We decided to make it our mission," he said.

The Larsons asked Tom Jones, a park supervisor for the city of Bakersfield, what they could do to install a dog water fountain. Jones said they could contribute money to the Bakersfield Foundation, a non-profit organization which lets anyone donate money to ongoing projects within the city.

The Larsons set up a Web site, www.thirstykrolldogs.com, where anyone can donate money via credit card, Paypal or by mailing a check. Once the $6,000 needed for the water fountain is raised, Larson said he will make a check out to the Bakersfield Foundation.

From there, the money will be appropriated to the correct fund already in place, said Rhonda Smiley, secretary of the Bakersfield Foundation.

As of Monday, thirstykrolldogs.com had raised $1,256.25 toward the goal.

All parks within the city require dogs to be on leashes. Some parks, such as University Park and Kroll Park, have large, fenced-in areas where dogs can be off-leash. If in doubt, most parks have signs posted regarding the rules for dogs, Jones said. University Park is the only other park with a water fountain for dogs.
