Two local UPS Stores and a local restaurant will donate half of net proceeds from all February sales, or a minimum of $2,000, to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

The UPS stores are at 1201 24th St. and 8200 Stockdale Highway, and Just Wing It restaurant is at 4725 Panama Lane.

All three companies are owned by Gurpinder Riar of Bakersfield.

Roni Deutch Tax Center has come to Bakersfield.

Local resident Alex Shafer opened the Bakersfield center -- one of many Roni Deutch Tax Centers across the country -- at 4550 Coffee Road. Perks the center is offering local businesses include having tax preparers travel to offices to prepare employees' tax returns, according to a news release.

The center can also provide debt resolution, payroll, bookkeeping and identity theft protection.

A Kern County man was named County Veterans Service Officer of the Year at a banquet in Sacramento.

Chuck Bikakis received the award Feb. 4 at the California County Veterans Service Officers Conference, a news release said. Bikakis has performed an excellent job of advocating for veterans, according to a statement from Roger Brautigan, secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Career Services Center would like to thank everyone who recently donated business clothing to its offices.

Piles of business suits for both men and women, shoes, purses and other professional clothing were donated, marketing supervisor Danette Scarry said. She said the response was overwhelming and she appreciates the community's support.
