Community Christian Service Center -- Lake Isabella needs volunteers for a variety of projects that range from re-roofing a house to helping in its office at 6105 Lake Isabella Blvd. People in the community with housing, food and other needs are invited to contact the center for help. Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired needs a volunteer to do grocery shopping once a week for its Independent Living Skills class that is held at the Center at 1124 Baker St. in Bakersfield. Call Marie at 322-5234 for more details.
North of the River -- Rasmussen Center is setting up a new route for its Meals on Wheels program and needs additional delivery drivers. Drivers are needed Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, with a special need for Thursday and Friday drivers. Volunteers may sign up to drive one day a week to all five, if desired. Mileage is reimbursed and an application and fingerprint check are required. Call Diane Hooper at 392-2030 to sign up.
Reach 4 Greatness Mentoring Program is looking for volunteers to mentor youths up to 18 years old, one-on-one or in a group, to help young people follow a career exploration resource program at local schools or at its office, 1225 California Ave. An initial training session, followed by an ongoing training program throughout the first three months of service, will be provided. Volunteers must be able to commit to serve one year and must pass a background check. Call Alicia at 322-4673 to arrange for an interview.
United Farm Workers -- Delano needs a bilingual (Spanish) receptionist volunteer to answer phones, greet the public and perform other office duties such as data entry, filing and some typing. Call Jeanette at 725-9730 if you can help.
Kern County Library needs volunteers to shelve books and materials at all its branches. Volunteers will sort and organize returned materials and interfile them to appropriate collections, separate and shelve improperly filed materials, and scan materials on shelves to maintain proper organization for easy accessibility by patrons. American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to help make phone calls. Calls may be made to individuals who need to update their first aid and/or CPR certificates; to thank donors; to remind volunteers about upcoming meetings and/or training sessions; to contact potential sponsors about their products or events; to call military members and their families to tell them about available scholarship programs; and to conduct client surveys about their services. Mercy Hospital is seeking volunteers for its "Art for Healing" program at the Truxtun campus that seeks to nurture and enhance a sense of well-being in its patients, caregivers, family members and employees. It is offering a wide range of expressive activities including but not limited to painting, drawing, coloring, writing, working with clay, making collages and creating reflection boxes.
Volunteers are needed who have a desire to engage with patients at bedside using various creative activities. Volunteers are also needed to help host and assist with group programs being offered to the public at the new Art and Spirituality Center and to help with staff or clerical support when needed.
Comprehensive orientation, training and support will be provided to all volunteers.

Golden Empire Youth Tackle Football and Cheer is looking for volunteer youth tackle football and cheer coaches for children 7 through 14 years old for the 2010 football season. Coaches are needed in all areas of Bakersfield, Shafter, Wasco and Arvin. Volunteer coach applications can be submitted online at geyf.org or by calling the league office at 837-4393.
