Connie Sack, director of instructional services for Kern High School District, was named Shafter High's new principal Tuesday at a school board meeting.

She takes over immediately for John Davis, who stepped down recently for personal reasons. Former Arvin High School principal Blanca Cavazos was the interim principal.

Sack has been at the district office since 2007, but before that she was the assistant principal for instruction at Shafter High for five years.

Other positions include principal of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools' Community Learning Center and KCSOS director of charter schools.

"I believe my experience both as an administrator for the Kern High School District and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office has prepared me for the challenge of leadership positions," she said in a statement.

Here are more news tidbits out of Tuesday's meeting:

* A KHSD candidate forum is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 14 in West High School's auditorium. Seven candidates are vying for three seats.

* The district is doing away with paper agendas and packets for school board meetings to save money. School board members now have a computer screen in front of them where they can skim through information. Other districts, including Standard School District, have also taken the electronic route.

* Board President Joel Heinrichs asked district staff to look into widening the street near Independence High School, which sits at Old River and McCutchen roads.

* The board approved the naming of West High's stadium in honor of former athletic trainer Booker Kilgore.

* The district updated its board bylaws and policies to include a segment addressing cyber bullying.

* The board heard a report from KHSD tech head Paul Helman. The district in the coming years will implement a parent portal system so they can track their student's progress, and also update a 15-year-old gradebook system for teachers to use, among other things.

* The district started its 117th year with 37,316 students.
