If it were up to Bakersfield's fire chief, folks would watch fireworks not from their street or backyard, but at a public display staged by professionals.
"We strongly encourage people to celebrate at a public display. Patriotism doesn't mean you need to light something that reaches 2,000 degrees," said Ron Fraze, a vocal opponent of consumer fireworks.
But for those who desire the thrill and tradition of setting off their own fireworks, here are some safety tips to remember this season:
Use only state-approved "safe and sane" fireworks. In general, if the firework flies, rotates or explodes, it's not state-approved.
Observe local laws. Spinning fireworks such as ground bloom flowers, Zoomers and Red Rose Blooms are banned in the city of Bakersfield, along with Piccolo Petes, Whistling Phantoms and Screamin' Willys.
Always store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
Light fireworks on a hard, flat and level surface to ensure stability, and keep a safe distance.
Only use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass or trees.
Have an adult present and a water hose or bucket ready for use.
Never point or throw fireworks at another person or pets.
Never attempt to relight or fix a "dud" and don't modify a firework.
Soak used fireworks in water overnight.
To report a fire emergency, call 911.
Report the sale or use of illegal fireworks to your local police or fire department. Local police and fire departments again will deploy extra personnel to rigorously enforce the law.
