Some well-known Bakersfield families are throwing a $1,000-a-head fundraiser next week for Meg Whitman, former eBay chief executive and Republican governor hopeful.

The private June 30 event is being hosted by Barbara Grimm-Marshall and Darcy Marshall, Kari Grimm, and Bonnie and Stan Ellis. Sponsors include Mary and Greg Bynum, Judy and Bob Hampton and Pattie and Jimmy Yee. The dinner and reception will take place at the Grimm-Marshalls' southwest estate.

Grimm-Marshall is the widow of Rod Grimm, co-founder of the world's biggest carrot grower, Grimmway Farms. The family had previous political success supporting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign, and through Grimmway's financial backing of major workers' compensation reform measures.

You may recognize the other names as well: Stan Ellis, businessman and majority owner of the Bakersfield Jam basketball team, ran for state Assembly in 2006. The Bynums own a large real estate firm. Waste magnate Bob Hampton was a long-time school district trustee; Jimmy Yee is a local political consultant.

Whitman has been through Bakersfield several times in recent months but hasn't yet stopped for media interviews.
