Two Bodfish residents were killed Saturday when an ultralight plane crashed in the Lake Isabella area shortly after 1 p.m. Authorities said two people were on board -- Donald Wright, 31, and Athena Moreno, 18 -- and that both were dead when officials arrived.
The plane went down in the area of Eva Avenue and Barlow Road, near Isabella Auxiliary Dam, Kern County Fire Department Capt. Bill Brickey said. According to the Kern County Sheriff's Office, the aircraft had taken off from the Auxiliary Dam Campground shortly before the crash. It said the aircraft appeared to suffer a mechanical failure at about 1,000 feet and that both of the individuals were ejected from the aircraft before it hit the ground.
The Sheriff's Office said the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the crash and that NTSB investigators were expected to look into the incident today.
