NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edward's Air Force Base appointed David D. McBride to director of the overall center.

He has worked as acting director since April 4, 2009 after the retirement of former Dryden director Kevin L. Petersen.

McBride began his career at Dryden in 1982 as a cooperative education student where he specialized in digital flight control systems analysis.

He left the NASA center for five years in 1993 to serve as executive vice president and chief information officer of McBride and Associates, Inc. in Albuquerque, N.M.

In 1998, McBride returned to NASA with his MBA. He has worked his way up from acting deputy director in June 2008 until receiving the official appointment in January 2009. He is a resident of the Lancaster/Palmdale area.

 

Bright House Networks challenges students to explore national issues by producing a five- to eight-minute video documentary.

Students in Bakersfield can enter the C-Span 2010 Studentcam Competition where they have the chance to win money for their school. The deadline to submit video entries is Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The competition is open to all middle and high school students, grades 6-12. To enter, students are asked to make a video about either one of the country's greatest strengths or a challenge the country is facing.

There is a total of $50,000 in cash prizes for the competition and Bright House Networks announced it will provide an additional $2,000 per division to students and teachers in each of its six divisions.

Winners of the competition will be announced in March and the winning videos will air on C-SPAN in April. Guidelines and details are available at www.brighthouse.com/studentcam.

 

Champs BBQ & Catering will celebrate its 10th anniversary Jan. 10. Since the restaurant is closed that day, it will celebrate Monday, Jan. 11 by donating 10 percent of all restaurant sales that day to the Boys and Girls Club of Kern County.

A donation jar will be in the restaurant and Champs will give a $100 gift card to one lucky winner. Employees will take down the names of customers and those who just want to stop by to donate.

"It is not about making money that day, it's about raising money for the Boys and Girls Club," said Champs owner Carrie Champness, who is also a board member of the club that is in constant need of money.

The restaurant is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and is at 35315 Merle Haggard Drive, Suite 110.

 

The Bakersfield American Cancer Society Discovery Shop invites the public to attend its "Signature Wedding Event" that begins Friday, Jan. 29.

According to manager Carla Hughes, there have been close to $50,000 in retail donations. All dresses will be 50 to 70 percent off the retail price.

There are brand-new designer wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses and mother-of-the-bride dresses. Shoppers can also select from gently used dresses. Accessories such as jewelry, veils and shoes to purchase.

Engagement picture packages can be purchased at 50 percent of value. Also, the shop is trying to find cakes, a florist and limo service to help with the event.

Shoppers can get a sneak peek in the store's front window , 5420 California Ave. The event is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 29 and 30 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 31.
