The State Route 178 Widening Project has been recognized by Roads & Bridges Magazine as one of the top 10 road projects in North America this year.

The local project ranked fifth out of 10, and to top things off, the magazine used a photo from the project on the cover of the magazine.

The "Roads & Bridges' Top 10 Roads" awards was created in 2000 and recognizes the top projects on the continent. The magazine's editorial staff submits nominations based on project challenges, impact to region and scope of work, according to the magazine's website.

The project widened three miles of Highway 178 from two lanes to six lanes, east of Morning Drive to Masterson Street, and from two to four lanes from Masterson to Mira Monte Drive.

"Between Canteria Road/Bedford Green Drive and Masterson Street, the project consisted of shifting the proposed alignment of Highway 178 three feet south of the existing alignment," said the magazine's story. "This shift allowed the widening of the highway to six lanes while minimizing impacts on an existing 30-inch gas transmission utility easement along the north side of the highway, said the magazine's article."
