Things are about to get heated at Firehouse Restaurant. The eatery, along with Bakersfield Professional Firefighters and Kern County Firefighters, is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by holding a unique competition.

Firefighters from the Bakersfield Fire Department and the Kern County Fire Department will compete in a bartending contest to see who can pour the best cocktails and the team that raises the most money in tips wins.

"They are really excited to battle each other," said Melissa Newton, the manager at Firehouse on Calloway. "They are very competitive."

Each fire department will have firefighters tending a bar in one-hour shifts between from 5 to 10 p.m. today, Dec. 6, at Firehouse Restaurant, 2905 Calloway Drive.

Not only will customers be able to vote for the best bartender, but they can also cast a vote for “Best Drink,” “Best Service,” “Best Smile” and “Crowd Favorite.”

In addition to the funds raised from customer tips, Firehouse Restaurant will donate 15 percent of all sales during the event to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The proceeds from the event will benefit local families served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
