There is still time to sign up for the "Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash" event being held Saturday featuring a fun run, races and march to fight against DUI crimes and support victims of them.
The fourth annual event, presented by the law firm Chain Cohn Stiles, raises awareness and funds for local MADD Kern County programs.
Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., a ceremony at 7:30 a.m., runs at 8 a.m. and an awards ceremony later featuring Coach Jim White of "McFarland, USA" fame.
It will be held at the Park at River Walk, 11200 Stockdale Highway.
Pre-registration packet pick-up is from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Action Sports, 9500 Brimhall Road, #400. People can register on the MADD website (www.walklikemadd.org/bakersfield), Thursday at Action Sports or before the event begins on Saturday, starting at 6:30 a.m.
As of September, 17 people have died this year from crashes caused by people who drove under the influence, according to a news release quoting the Kern County District Attorney's office. Kern is averaging 11 DUI arrests per day, it said.
The annual MADD event has raised more than $150,000.
