Bakersfield residents can channel their inner polar bear at a special event on Monday.

The annual Polar Bear Plunge will be held at the McMurtrey Aquatic Center, located at 1325 Q St., from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants ages 7 and up will get to take an icy plunge into the center's activity pool. 

It costs $5 to plunge, and another $20 for a sweatshirt. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.

The U.S. Forest Service has appointed Kevin Elliot as the new supervisor of the Los Padres National Forest.

Elliot, a supervisor for the Sequoia National Forest who has been stationed in Porterville, will take over the post from Bob Baird, who has been promoted to another position within the Forest Service. Elliot will begin his position on Jan. 22 and will be stationed in Goleta, according to the Forest Service.
