The City of Bakersfield has completed a project aimed at reducing water consumption.

On Nov. 30, the city’s Recreation and Parks Department finished a project that involved the installation of an irrigation control system called Rain Bird Maxicom at 24 parks across the city with the goal to reduce consumption by 30 percent.

Funding for the project came from $681,739 in grant money provided in January 2016 from the Smart Irrigation Controller Project, a statewide program that funds projects with the goal of improving public health and the environment.

Los Padres National Forest officials have opened up access to the Mt. Pinos Ranger District to the public, as the danger of the Thomas Fire has declined in the area.

The only areas of the forest where access is still prohibited are areas within the Thomas Fire perimeter around the Ojai and Santa Barbara Ranger Districts. Fire remains active within portions of those areas. The closure will remain in effect until it is safe to re-enter.
