The Lauren Small Children’s Center at Memorial Hospital is participating in Children’s Hospitals Week next week.

The center will hold a rally on Friday during which the center will hand out its 2018 Children’s Hospital Week Champion award to Justin Maness, who is a Type 1 diabetic. The rally will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Children’s Healing Garden, 420 34th St.

Next week, activities will be held for kids nationwide, such as a Facebook Live-athon on March 7 at 4:30 p.m., which will feature appearances by celebrities. The stream can be found at

The streaming site Twitch is holding its Extra Life United event March 8–10. Gamers from all over the world will compete to raise money for children’s hospitals. The Lauren Small center has received more than $130,000 since 2012 through the event.

The goal of Children’s Hospitals Week is to raise awareness of what the hospitals provide and highlight the need for donations.

The Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce is holding its Pancakes and Partnerships event on March 8. 

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Chamber office, 1725 Eye St. Small businesses will get the chance to network with representatives of the Kern High School District as well as Castle & Cook California Inc. and hear what services they need.
