The Kern County Veterans Service Department and the Kern Veterans Memorial Foundation will host its annual Memorial Weekend program “Salute to Kern’s Fallen Heroes” May 27.

The event honors Kern County Veterans whose lives were lost serving their country. It will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at the Kern Veterans Memorial and Wall of Valor at Truxtun Avenue and S Street, near the Bakersfield Amtrak station.

Open to the public, the event will feature the National Anthem, a flag salute, wreath laying, rifle salute and playing of Taps. Medal of Honor citations of Larry Pierce and Leonard Alvarado will be read aloud.

The Associated Veterans of Bakersfield Honor Guard and the Sons of the American Revolution will provide honor guards. Bagpipes will be played by Linda Snoddy. Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood, a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, will be the keynote speaker.

Roughly 150 seats will be available.
