Tejon Ranch Co. plans to host a dinner Tuesday for a small group of people it hopes will show their support for one of the company’s development projects at a public workshop later in the evening.

The meal from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. at Bakersfield’s El Sombrero restaurant is a private gathering closed to the general public. A workshop offering information about the company’s Grapevine master-planned residential and commercial project is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Kern County’s Public Services Building, 2700 M St.

Consisting of appetizers and a buffet, the event is nothing more than an opportunity for the Lebec-based agribusiness and real estate developer to keep in contact with its supporters and update them about the project, said Derek C. Abbott, Tejon Ranch’s vice president of community development and resource planning.

He said the company generally tries to become more familiar with people supportive of its projects. A dinner was considered appropriate in this case because of the workshop’s timing, he added.

As of mid-afternoon Monday, the company was expecting to feed no more than about 10 members of the public, plus the same number of Tejon Ranch representatives.

If approved as proposed, Grapevine would include 12,000 residential units and 5.1 million square feet of commercial and industrial space to be built in phases 25 miles south of Bakersfield along Interstate 5. It would not begin construction for at least a couple of years.

Tejon Ranch recently sent promotional materials to hundreds of people in the Frazier Park area and other communities who have expressed an interest in the project.
