Q: I'm on the bike bath daily, and there's a spot that is really dangerous for bikers. I'm wondering: How can I request to get it fixed? It's a very bumpy entrance for the underpass at Coffee Road and Truxtun Avenue. The two bridges that follow, especially the middle one, also have a bumpy entrance and exit.

A: Most minor bike path repairs are done through the city of Bakersfield Recreation & Parks Department.

Dianne Hoover, department director, said it's best to send in your repair request by e-mail to: ComPks@bakersfieldcity.us. Put "bike path repair request" in the subject line.

If it needs a significant fix, the city's Public Works Department might need to step in, but park staffers will relay the information. Some eastern portions are maintained by the county.

We've already forwarded your request to the department, so hopefully it will be looked into soon.

Q: I'm wondering about some construction going on right off Lake isabella Boulevard, opposite the memorial park. After the Piute Fire there were several flash flood flows down the creek bed and I notice every day the bulldozers leveling the land for some kind of construction on either side of the creek bed! I would have thought nobody could build there.

I'm a little afraid they might even fill in the creek bed and then where would the water go? Maybe down my street. Eek.

A: I think we can put your worries to rest.

Flash floods after the fire deposited silt along the creek and crews are removing it to restore the creek to its pre-flood condition, said Chuck Lackey, director of county Engineering and Survey Services.

Q: Some time ago, July or August, there was an article that referenced a survey that found that one of people's major concerns was spousal abuse. I cannot remember if this was local, statewide or national...it was before the recent incidents that Lois Henry is writing about. Can you help me find the survey?

- Linda Huggard

A: Here's a link to the report: www.kernfoundation.org/index.php?page_id=54&news_item_id=18.

Editor's note: We have an update to an Ask TBC published Thursday. A reader asked about the WinCo planned for Panama Lane and Ashe Road, which has been stalled by a lawsuit challenging an environmental report on the project.

WinCo spokesman Michael Read essentially confirmed what we quoted city officials as saying: the company is waiting to see whether an appeal is filed in the case (a judge recently said the report was OK) before deciding whether to go further in the development process.

Ask The Californian appears on Mondays and Thursdays. Submit questions to asktbc@bakersfield.com or to The Bakersfield Californian, c/o Christine Bedell, P.O. Bin 440, Bakersfield, CA 93302.
