The Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has voted to oppose Proposition 16, the Pacific Gas and Electric Co.-supported initiative that would require two-thirds approval of area voters in order to form a publicly run electric utility.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, the board said the measure would reduce options available to local governments while also furthering PG&E's utility monopoly.
The board also took positions on other propositions headed for the June 8 ballot, deciding to:
* Support Proposition 14, which would change state elections so that the two candidates who earn the most votes in the June primary advance to the November general election, regardless of their party affiliation;
* Oppose Proposition 15, which would dedicate public money to the campaigns of candidates for California Secretary of State.
* Support Proposition 17, a measure that would allow insurers to offer a discount to new customers who do not let their coverage lapse for more than 90 days.
