California City Correctional Center does not have another deal to replace the contract it had to house federal offenders, which expires at the end of September.

As a result, Corrections Corp. of America, the private company that runs the 2,304-bed facility, notified the state of California that it may lay off as many as 67 employees.

"We're actively marketing the facility to other potential state and federal partners," said spokesman Steve Owen. "Those efforts are ongoing and will continue after September if we don't have a new contract by then."

The Nashville-based company said in the meantime, California City employees can request to be transferred to one of its other 60 facilities in 19 states. Only one other is located in California. That one is in the San Diego area.
