Valley Plaza Mall has begun demolishing its long vacant Robinsons-May department store to make way for a new Target.

Robinsons-May, which was two levels and 128,000 square feet, will be replaced by a one-story, 148,000-square-foot Target.

The store at the mall is one of two new Targets the Minneapolis-based discount chain plans in Bakersfield. Another is set to anchor Castle & Cooke’s Shops at River Walk development in the southwest.

The Robinsons-May building is now partially rubble. The hard hat construction zone has been surrounded by a chain link fence with green mesh that bars access to the adjacent parking lot.

Access to Pacific Theater’s parking lot is partly blocked off. You can enter from the east side of the movie theater, across the street from Gottschalks.

In other mall news, another Valley Plaza anchor, Sears, says it’s planning some minor cosmetic changes.

The mid-tier department store is getting a paint job, and will repave its parking lot and update its interior, said general manager Travis Phillips.
