PG&E Corp.'s second-quarter earnings fell 14 percent year-over-year to $333 million, or 86 cents per common share, partly because of the company's financial support for a failed June ballot initiative.

The San Francisco-based parent of the utility Pacific Gas and Electric Co. reported Wednesday that it took a one-time charge of $20 million, or 5 cents per diluted common share, related to its backing of Proposition 16. The measure would have changed the state Constitution to require two-thirds voter approval before a local government could form its own electric utility.

PG&E shares closed Wednesday up 21 cents, or about half a percent, at $45.30 on heavier-than-average trading, Yahoo! Finance reported. The company's stock has ranged from $34.95 to $45.79 over the past year.

Corporation for Better Housing, a Bakersfield nonprofit that builds housing for the poor, hosted a grand opening Wednesday for a one-acre grass field offering recreational opportunities to residents in the southeast.

The park was named Kimbrough Field in honor of The Rev. Ishmael Kimbrough Jr., who died in June at age 75 after serving for 39 years as pastor of The People's Missionary Baptist Church.

The Chest Pain Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital has won the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline Bronze Performance Achievement Award.

Hospitals that receive the award have demonstrated that for 90 days in a row, 85 percent or more patients who experienced a heart attack caused by prolonged blood blockage are treated within a certain period of time, and that they are discharged with treatment guidelines recommended by the association.

The hospital estimated that 400,000 Americans suffer this kind of heart attack every year.

Milan Institute has scheduled a grand opening for 9 a.m. Aug. 14 to showcase its Bakersfield campus at 2822 F St.

The campus offers training programs in the fields of esthetician, cosmetology and massage therapy.

The event is to feature refreshments, giveaways and 50 percent discounts on salon services and one-hour Swedish massages by students under instructor supervision.

Milan has 17 campuses across the West, and is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education.
