Blockbuster Video is closing a store at 5600 California Ave. in southwest Bakersfield, but seven other local stores remain.

The last day of business there will be Jan. 10, said spokesman Randy Hargrove. As of last week, there are no rentals available at that location. Inventory is for sale only.

Visitors to the store can pick up a coupon for $1.99 movie rentals good at nearby locations. The company also offers a mail order service through its Web site, www.blockbuster.com.

In a regulatory filing in September, the Dallas-based video store chain said it was evaluating closing as many as 960 of its 3,800 U.S. stores through the end of next year.

The company is struggling against competition from Netflix and Redbox and reduced entertainment spending by consumers.
