A "store within a store" is scheduled for a soft opening Tuesday inside the Best Buy on Rosedale Highway, marking the 45th location of Pacific Sales -- and the Southern California-based chain's first in the Central Valley.

With about 6,000 square feet and seven employees, Pacific Sales Kitchen and Home expects to sell a wide array of appliances, plumbing goods and kitchen vignettes. The store offers free delivery and free installation on many items.

A formal grand opening is set for Friday.

Pacific was founded in Torrance 50 years ago, and sold in 2006 to Best Buy. Since then, it has grown from 14 locations to 35 standalone stores and 10 of what it calls stores within a store. Some of the stores are located in Northern California, Arizona and Nevada.

District manager Daniel Leach said the company selected Bakersfield because of the size of the market here.

"We feel like Pacific Sales will be able to provide a large assortment and a quality of service that Bakersfield will be able to appreciate," Leach said.

Store manager Martin Schroeder said the location will expand what is now a small number of appliance retailers in town.

Bryan Urner, who has worked at Pacific Sales in Valencia for two years, said he will manage the store's contractor sales. He said the company plans to open locations on the East Coast, and that the company plans to add 400 stores in five years.
