The state's Employment Development Department has temporarily waived a requirement that unemployment insurance applicants register on its job search Web site because of a security breach.
Visitors to www.caljobs.ca.gov see the following message: "As of Friday, October 23, 2009, CalJOBSSM, California's online job exchange system, is temporarily unavailable."
The state shut down the site as a precaution after several users reported being able to access other people's resumés online.
That access was available to a "limited" number of resumé postings and did not compromise confidential information such as Social Security numbers, said department spokesman Kevin Callori.
"We don't have an exact date when it will be up again, but we're working on it," he said. "We just want to be sure it's secure before we go online again."
Some 798,000 job seekers statewide used the site between July and September.
Employers can list job openings there for free.
Austin "Dustin" Orrell, 63, had been using the site since he was laid off from the Internal Revenue Service in August. He's looking to relocate from Fresno to Bakersfield, where the bulk of his family lives, and is frustrated that he can't take advantage of a significant job search tool.
"It works beautifully when it's working," he said. "But right now all I can do is read the paper and rely on word of mouth.
"I'll be glad when it's back up again."
