Progress is being made on the Target that will anchor the Shops at River Walk, but there’s still no activity at the construction site of another planned Target at Valley Plaza.
A few days ago, walls went up at the River Walk Target at Stockdale Highway and River Run Boulevard. Some of the red brick facade is visible, and a circular cutout hints at the architectural details.
Contractor Whiting Turner Contracting Co. did not return phone calls to comment on the construction schedule, nor did developer Castle & Cooke.
Minneapolis-based Target Corp. also didn’t respond to requests for an interview.
The store will be 140,000 square feet, which required special dispensation from the City Council because the shopping center had earlier been limited to 100,000 square feet per store.
Meanwhile, Valley Plaza Mall insists its Target remains on track.
The mall began demolition of the former home of a Robinsons-May in August, but construction abruptly halted late last year after contractors filed lawsuits complaining they had not been paid.
The mall’s parent company, General Growth Properties Inc., is attempting to restructure debt to stave off bankruptcy.
Mall general manager Donna Berlin said Wednesday that “as far as we know, everything is still on.”
Construction has been delayed until later this year, Berlin said, and the store will likely open in 2010.
