To increase electrical capacity for agricultural customers hit hard by the drought, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is installing two new circuits out of its Tupman Substation in northwest Bakersfield, and will string five and a half miles of power lines on 100 new poles.

This project will add 80 megawatts of new capacity to the electrical grid in Kern County. That’s enough electricity to power about 60,000 homes.

The improvement is one of several projects planned for the first quarter of the year to bump up local capacity, and should be finished by Friday, said PG&E spokeswoman Cindy Pollard.

Construction began a couple of weeks ago but will be ramping up on Tuesday. There may be some minor traffic disruptions near Stockdale Highway and Highway 43 (Enos Lane) next week.
