oil_ah.JPG Alex Horvath / The Californian A small-scale version of the Taft oil worker monument is displayed this month at the county administrative building. On hand for an unveiling ceremony were Sculptor Ben Victor's parents Joyce and Jeff Victor.

A model of the Taft Oilworker Monument is on display at the Kern County Administrative Building through the end of the month.

The model, and the actual monument, was designed by Taft native Benjamin Victor, who competed against two other sculptors to get the job.

The model is on display in hopes of attracting more donations for the project. Donations are needed to build the monument in bronze, which lasts longer than iron steel, said Vic Killingsworth, chairman of the monument committee.

The names of donors will be placed on a brick or plaque, depending on the donation amount, around the monument. The monument is expected to be completed next year in time for Taft's 100th anniversary celebration.

Donations can be sent to Oilworker Monument, 400 Kern St., Taft, CA 93268. For more information on how to help call the Taft District Chamber of Commerce at 765-2165 or go to the monument Web site, www.taftofwmonument.org.
