Terry Maxwell has been hit hard by the recession.

The owner of T.L. Maxwell's Restaurant and Bar in downtown Bakersfield has had to cut hours and employees. He said he believes other restaurants in the city are facing the same hardships.

And with the state government adding $12.5 billion in new taxes this year and the possibility of more coming, Maxwell said, "I'm doing everything I can to make sure this restaurant survives. Government is making that difficult.

"I have to cut my spending. They should too."

On Thursday, Maxwell showed his support for Californians Against Higher Taxes, a coalition of small businesses, taxpayer organizations and large employers that is against any new state tax increase.

The coalition is traveling across the state to get its message out about how new taxes would harm families and kill job creation, said spokesman Scott Macdonald.

Also showing his support for the group Thursday was Michael Turnipseed, executive director of the Kern County Taxpayers Association. He focused on the Legislature's idea of an oil severance tax, which he is against.

"We often think Sacramento ignores us here in Kern County," he said. "With a tax aimed straight at us, we can't say that anymore."
