A $319,655 grant awarded recently to Employers' Training Resource is expected to cover job training expenses for 120 people interested in working in the energy efficiency industry.

The grant would fund creation of a Green Building Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program in Kern, Inyo and Mono counties. The program would prepare participants 18 years and older to apply for apprenticeship programs and jobs connected to the so-called green building economy.

ETR is partnering in the project with Kern Community College District and the Sheet Metal Workers International Association, Local 105. It was among 34 organizations selected in California to be part of the program.

A new Hampton Inn and Suites hotel is expected to open Dec. 10 near Highway 58 at 7941 E. Brundage Lane.

Owned and managed by Raju Verma, the hotel features more than 30 suites, including double queen and king rooms. It also has a fitness center, an on-site laundry facility, a business center, heated pool and spa and free shuttle service to destinations within a five-mile radius.

Bright House Networks-Bakersfield Division announced Wednesday that it has added 17 high definition cable channels and two Filipino channels -- GMA Life and GMA Pinoy.

The high definition channels include Big Ten Network HD, E! HD, Headline News HD and Cartoon HD, as well as two additional Movie Channel HD channels.

The HD channels are included at no additional charge to Bright House's HD television subscribers. The Filipino channels cost extra.
