Worth Noting in business: Hiring center opens, company donations and more

Wal-Mart has opened a temporary hiring center to recruit about 600 associates to work at a new store opening in the southwest next year.

The hiring center at 3850 River Lakes Drive, off of Coffee Road, opened Dec. 5.

The new Wal-Mart at 5075 Gosford Road is under construction.

 

The company hoping to build a hydrogen energy plant near Taft, Hydrogen Energy California, or HECA, said it has donated $14,000 to local charitable organizations.

The sum was divided between the Golden Empire Gleaners, Community Action Partnership of Kern, the Bakersfield Rescue Mission, the Bakersfield Homeless Center, Buttonwillow Healthy Start, NEEDS Center of Taft and Buttonwillow's Parks and Recreation community programs.

"As this (power plant) project grows and moves forward we will strive to be active members of the community," HECA spokeswoman Tiffany Rau said in a news release.

 

Porterville-based Bank of the Sierra has made donations of $1,000 each to The Salvation Army, Bakersfield and the Tehachapi Heritage League.

Both donations are part of the bank's Sierra Grant Program. Nonprofits interested in applying for such grants can pick up an application at any of the institution's branches, or by visiting the bank's website: bankofthesierra.com.

Bakersfield's Salvation Army provides for the basic necessities of local people in need. The bank's donation is intended to support the organization's meal and emergency food distribution programs.

The heritage league collects, archives and exhibits material dealing with Tehachapi-area history and culture. The bank's donation is specifically earmarked to help build an addition to the Tehachapi Museum that would house Kawaiisu Tribe artifacts.

 

Organizers of the International Women's Day awards dinner March 8 at the Petroleum Club are seeking nominations for foreign-born women who have made notable contributions to Kern County.

Nominees should have made important contributions within their profession and be service-oriented people who contribute to the community at large.

Foreign-born women will be honored in the categories of arts/entertainment, business/finance, community service, education, health services, law/government and sciences.

California's struggling dairy farmers will receive a temporary adjustment in the minimum price of milk, the Department of Food and Agriculture announced Wednesday.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture is increasing the minimum prices of all milk uses by varying amounts temporarily from January through March 2010.

 

Tickets are now available for the Kern County Board of Trade's 12th annual State of the County event, set for Jan. 20 at the Bakersfield Marriott Hotel at the Convention Center.

The event's keynote speaker -- the county Board of Supervisors' incoming chairman -- is not expected to be selected until early January.

Tickets cost $45 apiece, or $450 for a 10-seat table. They can be purchased over the phone by calling 868-KERN (5376), or 800-500-KERN (5376). Tickets can also be bought at the Board of Trade office at 2101 Oak St. The deadline to buy is Jan. 13.

The event is to begin with a 5:30 p.m. reception, followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The program is to begin at 7:30 p.m.
