Bakersfield home prices slipped in September, though not by much, as the local housing market entered what is traditionally a slow time of year for home-shopping, according to a report by local appraiser Gary Crabtree.

The median price for an existing home sold last month was $210,075, or 2.3 percent less than the median a year before, and 6.6 percent less than August’s mark, the report stated.

Crabtree estimated price appreciation in the local market for existing, single-family homes at 5.19 percent per year. That was down from August’s 6.33 percent and 15 percent in September 2014.

FedEx Ground took home a Kern Green award in the Overall Green Large Business category at the sustainability-promoting organization’s annual banquet last month.

Kern Green said FedEx won because of its steps to reduce its carbon footprint, such as becoming a zero-waste facility, water-saving investments, energy efficiency improvements and a no-idling policy for drivers.

Children First Campaign won in the Overall Green Small Business category because of its regularly scheduled clean-up days, educational opportunities for kids, planting of 40 Oklahoma Red Bud trees and efforts to clear empty parking lots of bulky waste.

Other business winners include Ikea Distribution Center, in the category of Air Quality Improvement or Pollution Prevention, Tasteful Selections (Building Material and Design), Covenant Coffee (Sustainable Purchasing) and Aera Energy LLC (Water Efficiency and Conservation).

Les Schwab Tire Centers this month opened its fourth Bakersfield location.

The store at 5411 Calloway Drive sells tires, alignments, batteries, brakes, custom wheels, shocks and struts.

The Bend, Ore.-based company has more than 450 locations across the western United States.

Power Machinery Center’s Bakersfield location has won a platinum award for its 2014 customer service.

The award was given by UniCarriers Forklift Americas. Nationwide, 210 forklift dealers received the award, including Power Machinery’s Oxnard location.

Power Machinery sells forklifts and material handling services for industrial customers.
