A woman who left a 10-month-old boy and a sibling alone in a bathtub earlier this week has pleaded not guilty to two felonies, and police said Wednesday the boy has died.
Celena Martinez, 40, is charged with two counts of willful cruelty to a child, and police said she could face more charges due to the child's death.
Police spokesman Sgt. Ryan Kroeker said police were dispatched to the Motel 6 on Easton Drive at 11:29 a.m. Monday to a report of an unresponsive child. They learned Martinez left the 10-month-old and a sibling, who Kroeker said he believed was a twin, by themselves in a bathtub.
When she returned, she found one child floating and another standing up, Kroeker said. She removed the boy from the tub, and a family friend arrived and began life-saving measures.
The boy was taken to a local hospital, where he died around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Kroeker said.
The children had been left in the care of Martinez and her boyfriend, who is a cousin of the children's mother. Kroeker said the boyfriend does not face charges.
The next court hearing for Martinez has been set for Aug. 28.
