Three men were sentenced to prison Wednesday after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the beating death of a man on Truxtun Avenue.

Manuel Martinez, 20, Jose Gonzales, 34, and Carlos Garcia, 23, each accepted plea agreements last month in exchange for the dismissal of first-degree murder charges that — if they'd been convicted — would have resulted in life terms in prison.

Martinez was sentenced to 16 years in prison, Garcia received nine years and Gonzales was sentenced to three years, according to court records.

The three assaulted 30-year-old Isaac Matthew Ortiz the night of Nov. 4 in the 200 block of Truxtun Avenue, according to court documents.

Ortiz was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he died Nov. 12 from head trauma.
