A man suspected of drunken driving is in jail for allegedly assaulting an officer and a deputy in an incident on March 15.

Brando Vaimaona, 34, faces a number of charges including driving under the influence of alcohol, battery on a peace officer and terrorist threats.

At 4:32 p.m. March 15, Bakersfield Police Department officers responded to a call of a hit-and-run crash involving a possible drunken driver. Witnesses at the scene directed officers to Vaimaona, who was detained.

Vaimaona was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and he was transported to a local hospital. While at the hospital, police say the handcuffed man first kicked a police officer in the groin then spit on a Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputy who had stepped in to help.

Neither officer was injured but the suspect sustained a facial laceration during the struggle.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at 327-7111.
