A 27-year-old man who died after being stabbed in south Bakersfield has been identified.

Coroner's officials say Jessie Angel Romero Mendoza was found unresponsive at about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday evening. He was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later.

According to sheriff's officials, Mendoza was stabbed during an altercation at a motel in the 1200 block of Union Avenue.

He got in his car and began driving away, but, due to his injuries, he couldn't continue and his vehicle came to rest at a nearby fence, according to the Sheriff's Office. Two passersby stopped and rendered medical aid until police were flagged down.

The suspect fled on foot and was described as a Hispanic man about 35 years old, standing 5 feet 8 inches and weighing about 185 pounds. He was wearing a white tank top-style shirt and dark-colored shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 861-3110.
