A person who was shot in southeast Bakersfield Thursday morning retrieved a gun and returned fire, according to deputies.

The incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. in the 600 block of Cottonwood Road, where deputies arrived to find a male shot in his lower back. He was taken to Kern Medical Center, deputies said.

Through witness statements and surveillance video, deputies discovered the male, after being shot at, ran into a business and armed himself, according to a Sheriff's Office release. He fired back at the suspect, who fled on foot and had not been located.
