A sheriff's helicopter crew rescued an 85-year-old woman Tuesday who was trapped in her truck surrounded by rushing floodwaters.

The helicopter was flying Kern County Grand Jury members over areas affected by recent rain and flooding to assess damage when it spotted a truck partly submerged on Caliente Creek Road, a Sheriff's Office release said.

It appeared the roadway collapsed when the truck tried crossing the rushing waters, the release said. Spotting one of the truck's doors open and realizing someone was inside, the crew landed the helicopter.

Deputy John McAdoo waded through knee-high water to the woman and carried her from the truck to safety, according to the release.
