Police were forced to call off a chase Monday night due to the suspect's dangerous driving, but ended up later tracking down and arresting the man, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Billy Tilford, 32, was arrested on suspicion of traffic and firearms violations as well as participation in a criminal street gang, police said.

The incident began at 10:21 p.m. when an officer tried stopping a vehicle in the 400 block of Union Avenue. A short chase ensued, ending when police called it off because of Tilford's reckless driving, according to the BPD.

The suspect vehicle was found abandoned a short time later, and the investigation led officers to the 200 block of Augusta Street, where Tilford was arrested, police said. A search of the residence where he was arrested turned up a loaded handgun.
