A traffic stop at South H Street and Planz Road late Saturday night led to a foot pursuit and an officer involved shooting that left the suspect dead, according to a BPD news release.
A two-officer patrol unit stopped a vehicle in the 1800 block of Planz Road. The driver ran land the officers pursued him, the news release said.
During the pursuit, the officer involved shooting occurred, and the fleeing suspect was hit. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died, the release said.
A firearm was located near the area of where the shooting occurred, the BPD said.
The investigation is ongoing and the name of the decedent will be released by the Kern County Coroner's Office, BPD said.
The officer who fired his weapon, Warren Martin, will be placed on routine administrative leave, pending review by the critical incident review board, the news release said.
Officer Warren Martin is the son of BPD Chief Lyle Martin and has been at BPD for one year, a BPD news release said. Chief Martin is aware of the shooting and has removed himself from the investigation and review process, assigning Assistant Chief Greg Martin to oversee the investigation, the release said.
This is Officer Martin's first officer involved shooting working for the BPD, the release said.
