A McFarland strip mall attached to an apartment building caught on fire early Sunday morning and damaged $300,000 worth of property with three of the nine businesses being damaged by fire and smoke, according to Kern County Fire Department news release.

There were no injuries to fire personnel or the public, the release said.

The Kern County Fire Department reported to the 100 block of W. Sherwood Ave. after receiving a call about a fire in a commercial building. Upon arrival crews encountered heavy fire showing through the roof of the strip mall, the release said. The crews prioritized stopping the spread of the fire to the apartments and residents were briefly evacuated after the roof partially collapsed, the release said.

Over $1,000,000 in property was saved and over 30 fire personnel including a safety officer and arson and breathing support were on scene, the release said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Kern County Fire Department said.
