A man who police said threatened a woman riding a horse Monday afternoon died shortly after being taken into custody, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Police were called at 1:46 p.m. by the victim, who said she was riding a horse on a bike path in the area of Manor Street and Denise Avenue when the suspect threatened her with a gun, according to a BPD news release.

Officers arrived and found the suspect lying in the dirt with the firearm — later determined to be an imitation gun — next to him. He was taken into custody without incident, the release said.

Minutes later, the suspect became unresponsive and medical aid was summoned, according to the release. The suspect died at the scene.

The victim provided police with evidence including photos and video of the incident, according to the release. The suspect's name has not yet been released.

Both officers involved in the arrest have been placed on routine administrative leave.
