An inmate defecated on himself Monday in Kern County Superior Court and wiped the feces on his face and clothing, multiple sources told The Californian.
The judge had not yet taken the bench in Department 1 when the incident occurred about 8:30 a.m., prompting deputies to clear the courtroom, sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said. Deputies managed to quickly remove other inmates who were near the man.
The inmate responded to deputies' commands and was led back to the downtown jail, Pruitt said.
The courtroom was cleaned, and proceedings resumed about 9:30 a.m.
"There was minimal delay due to the necessary cleanup, but all the calendared items were handled timely," Court Executive Officer Terry McNally said in an email.
A source with knowledge of the incident who wished to remain anonymous identified the inmate as 26-year-old Tyrone Tayvon Lewis. He's charged with multiple sex crimes involving a minor.
At this point, no new charges were pending in connection with Monday's disruption, Pruitt said.
Lewis is next due to appear in court Wednesday.
